So it happens sometimes that I'm completely wrong, and I'll be the first to admit it wouldn't be the first time. Last Thursday we had a situation where a ball was set over the net and a player from the same team attacked the ball completely on the other side of the net. I was under the impression that was legal and I can tell the young folks that back in the day it happened routinely in officiated tournaments. My club team had a play designed specifically to achieve this goal. However sometime in the ensuing decades, and I don't know when, the FIVB rules were amended to disallow such an attack unless the attack started with some part of the ball on the attackers side of the net. So if you jump high enough to attack the ball and the follow through puts your hand over the net that's OK. If the ball is completely on the other side of the net when you attack it, even if it came from your side, it's not OK. If you are really interested, there is a USA Volleyball Referee Rules Case 13.07.
